A list shows the range E0-EF being reserved for system use. Who's to say
what it has been reserved for on another system? 4F was also found in a
BIOS, and appears on no lists that I've ever seen. Someone who is more
knowledgeable than I once said that 4Fh was a "port mirror" and should be
safe to use, the specifics I don't recall.
out 4Fh,al is a solution to the jmp $+2 problem and I've tried it on dog
slow, slow, and fast machines; it's worked very well. I haven't tried it
on a 8088, 8086 or 80586+.
