owner and chief designer was robert alan singleton, still working out of
and industrial park at the back of liverpool from last i heard.
very good modem and at the time bob and i parted company on favour terms,
my illness was strting to kick in real bad and i effectively became an
invalid (i worked/consulted for datasat australasia and the interim company
before biztel products, or whatever its called these days). bob designed
and built a 2400 v22bis modem that would actually (slight exageration) to
the proverbial wet/or partialy damp string. i'll never forget the night we
tested the prototype not even cleaned up it talked to the pc usergroup bbs
in canberra as if it was on a clean line and down loads returned the
theoretical maximum atainable 97/98 percent transfer rate (no mnp 5 in
those days, that came latter)
if you rang the bbs number voice the spikes and line noise was
objaectionable and several well known, industry leaders at the time were
havin trouble connecting at 2400 and on some ocassions 1200 was
questionable.
yes, bob was a rare form of the genious, he knew what he was doing and did
it well, only problem was (some of) the opposition .. they were prepared to
sink him personally at any cost. thats the root of my
"opposition" to most australian modem manufactureres. anyone who
spends time working at the coal face gets to find out what a bunch of
misfits these ratbags really are, but time could have mellowed them
(personally i doubt that). .. ps i should be sorry for this outburst but i
can't bring myself to apologise.
anyone still using any datasat modems ??? especialy the split speed v23
model in the big box ?
regards ... jonathan
