Not just blue-collar workers make less than public school teachers in
many places.
Many white-collar workers with at least a bachelor's degree make less
than public school teachers in their towns, particularly when the value of
the excellent fringe-benefit packages many teachers get is factored in.
When the teacher's union, year after year, gets its members raises at a
time when many workers are facing "downsizings" and fringe-benefit cuts,
hostility is understandable.
