Absolutely -- they didn't even have rudimentary things like topographic
maps. Most officers couldn't use a compass. The idea of the 5-paragraph
field order hadn't been developed.
It really didn't take a Jackson to defeat them -- they would have simply
been swallowed up if they had managed to push the Americans out of
position.
