Actually, they did, you know.  They resisted financing the expedition until
after the seige of Granada (which they saw as a better use of their limted
funds), they gave bare bones support -- and a good part of what they
"gave" came from other people's pockets -- the Nina was provided
because the Port of Paolos owed the King a fine.

And the ships' companies were filled out, not with men paid the going rate
for seamen, but by prisoners.
