So on that day
Perhaps back in May...
You jumped on it quickly, raised panic, and turned off the power...

It's possible you baked the thermal pad between the heat sink and the
CPU... if it's dried out, it'd be like a cracked, dry lakebed instead
of a smooth muddy surface, and not providing the same cooling that it
used to.

It could also be that your new case fan is spinning slower than the old
one - in which case (pun intended!) air isn't getting ejected as
quickly.

What "silver grease" are you using?

Take another look at it, and replace it with another thin layer...

Well, older CPU designs like the AthlonXP and AthlonMP and Duron CPU's
are more dependent on a good mating of CPU core and heat sink with
thermal paste than the newer Athlon64, Sempron, and Pentium 4's, which
all feature a built-on "heat spreader" to increase the surface area of
the chip and the ability to wick away the heat...

I've seen a few cooked out - but frankly, I don't think I've ever left
a machine running long enough without ripping it apart somehow... I'm
always changing my gear. :)

Hope this helps!
