The sysop of the BBS you are using should be able to provide you with 
FIDONET.NA which is a listing of all the current echoes active on the 
backbone.  There is also ELIST which is comparable to a college catalog 
listing all echoes and detailed descriptions of what each one covers and the 
rules for participation.
The sysop of the BBS will normally carry those echoes that you are interested 
in if you request them. There shouldn't be a problem with that --- that is 
the purpose of running a BBS.
