How many times does this have to be explained to you?
When a merchant says a product is "free", that means you do not have to
pay anything for it at the time of purchase. Any cellular phone ad
you're likely to ever includes a fine print disclaimer that spells out
the terms and conditions required to get a cellular phone without having
to specifically pay for it.
When a cellular carrier's agent provides you with a phone, you don't
have to pay for it, but the cellular carrier DOES pay the agent for the
phone. But if you cancel your service (or the carrier cancels it for
non-payment of your bill), the agent has to return the commission he was
paid by the carrier. Since you have the phone, and it can no longer be
sold as new goods, then you must pay for it.
It used to be that agents could trust consumers, but too many of us were
burned too many times, so now we have to cover our butts against
deadbeats.
Now, if you're going to keep moaning about the way that marketing and
advertising works in the United States, why not pick on ALL of the
companies that bundle products and services and call them "free"? What
about fast food restaurants that give you a "free" coke as long as you
buy a hamburger? What about grocery stores that advertise "but one, get
one free", but that charge you half price if you only want one? What
about car dealers that throw in a "free" radio, ut will reduce the price
of the car if you take no radio?
Why can't you just accept the fact that if you have bad credit, you
simply can't get things that people with good credit can, and let it go
at that?
