smell of the bad old pre-post-industrial age.

o sulphured bunker oil.

o Chromate pickling baths.

o High-carcinogen oil-based printing ink.

o Hot PCB

o Hot wrought iron with oil on it.

o The sweet tailpipe smell of a clean-burning (but incomplete combustion)
12:1 gas engine on leaded fuel (see any classic car rally for a reminder -
they get it somewhere).

o Leaded gas 2-stroke model airplane engines.

o Red-lead oil-based paint going on a bridge on an August day.

o (for Brits) Coke ovens; bitumen burning; sulphurous coal burning; hot
motor oil on a sidevalve engine's exhaust manifold.

o And the winner - the Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce plant in NJ -
2-year-old rotting anchovies are the magic ingredient.
