Sounds like you have a memory size detection issue.  This was corrected in
the recent kernels you disdain.  Get Dani's patchldr and see if it says
your kernel needs to be patched.

Also, assuming you are using ide drives, check what mode Dani is running
the drives in, just in case.  The docs contain the copy command you need
to use.
