BL> It amuses me when people believe that programmers have to be BL> intelligent. It's true, but only as far as it goes. You have to BL> be intelligent to read, too... but only smarter than the BL> average bear. PL> I don't agree with you there. If you are 'below average' and PL> you have to struggle to learn to read then are you classified PL> as 'intelligent'????? I agree that an idiot can't be a successful programmer (in spite of evidence to the contrary), but we are arguing over a question of degree. When people say "programmers have to be intelligent" they assume it means a genius level IQ, not 100+. They speak of a "computer genius," or other such rubbish, as if they are speaking of the top 2% cut of the population. Bill Gates is a "computer genius" never a dead-lucky businessman. Such a fuss is made of intelligence and programming that totally adequate people of average IQ are dissuaded. For no good reason. In fact, programmers are below average earners, and justify this by assuming an intelligence they mostly don't have. Medicine and Law take a top 2% cut. Doctors and lawyers can claim to be intelligent. There is no such cut for Computer Science. If you are smarter than the average bear, you will do quite well. You may even be another Bill Gates. ...
