How about one of those Thermos type bottles designed for soup that have 
wide mouths?  You'd need to pre-heat with very hot tap water for maximum 
effect.
Also, I recently discovered moderately priced instant read digital 
thermometers.  Lechters, a somewhat cheesy kitchen goods store, has them for 
about $15.  These things read every half second or so.  I use mine for 
brewing beer, but I think it would be happy with bird formula.
