| subject: | Re: [OS2HW] Sorta OT help! |
Hello Steve
Some thanks are in order once again since a brief overview of the site
you listed appears to be the solution to the major issue that concerned me.
I have also found some on my own but Convenience pack 2 (possibly a
misnomer) is a major concern and this site might just be a workaround. It
just irks me that I have bought every release of OS/2 since v2.0, and while
not as rabid as some of the early TeamOS2 (I read someone claimed to have
received death threats over a flame war of M$ vs OS/2.. hehheh... whew!) I
did indeed spend considerable time and energy trying to gain converts with
many successes actually (not proportionately of course just high quantities
all around) and IBM is the one who dropped the ball repeatedly, yet simple
drivers and minor updates are now expected to come at what I see as
considerable cost to the very people who supported it most. It didn't go
unnoticed that IBM was only too glad to gloat over high ratings on a
favorite OS poll just a few years ago, rating
s that didn't come from banks and airports but all us redheaded step-children.
Although I too dislike drive letterring and first saw LVM as a relief in
a workaround that particular mess but even given the design directive that
LVM systems came after IBM an\bandoned the SOHO desktop user and needed
only design for a dedicated server/workstation environment (no multi boots
there) even now after considerable tweaking I see the interface as just
unforgiveably wonky and retrograde. When LVM first came out PQMagic was on
version 4.1, years had passed since it revolutionized partioning utility
and to me it's like once a better mousetrap has been made there is no good
reason to newly design one that doesn't at least measure up to something
already years old. While it might be a lark if it was done in the fashion
of someone riding a Conestoga wagon from coast-to-coast as a publicity
stunt or something after cars were invented, it's just crazy to go back
that far and consider that a working and workable tool....IMHO, of course.
;)
Sorry it wasn't so obvious about updating since I assumed modern hardware
basically requires considerable updating when you wish to run OS/2 on a
newer system, and frankly I can't understand how someone can avoid updates
unless you stay on an old machine. As for me having begun w/ v2.0 (it was
my first GUI unless you count shells like PCTools) I have done fixpaks from
diskettes, images on harddrives, and rsu installs as well as the java
netscape java stuff updates. I also kept a separate experimental box that
still runs even though it is probably loaded with spaghetti code from all
the Odin, emx, gcc, XFree86 and many other attempts to run as much as
possible from OS/2. Actually it may be quite a testament to OS/2's basic
ruggedness that such an evolutionary hodgepodge satill runs so well. Maybe
that's the reason I am setting out on this mad course to continue to hang
on and fight the fight from the ground up one more time. Either that or I
really have lost my mind ;)
Oh sorry for toppost. I suffer from a little excitement at posting to
the group for the first time in a long time from an OS/2 system even though
I basically had to build a linux router to get this thing connected
wirelessly. My ol' standby stays standalone most of the time and I just
transfer files with CD's, DVD's and USB drives.
Anyway, hope I haven't ranted and gushed too much. In addition to the
"passion of a project", any project, it is rather rewarding to
see the quality still in effect from the ground up after all this time
giving just a little justification and validation for such intense loyalty
against the odds and against the mainstream, who frankly lost out.
Jimmy
