I didn't have to face the agony of having her put down, thank God, but if I
did I would likely choose as your friend to be there till the end.

Her kidneys were failing. The doctors gave her 6 months to live 5 years
before she died. We had a ritual of giving her extra water by mouth every
day along with some tagamet to settle her stomach. Twice we had to have
her on a saline IV for a week. This worked to give her 5 more years of a
good quality of life, but in the final months it was obvious that unlike
the prior 5 years she was going down hill rapidly and another round of
saline IV for a week wouldn't work.

She was having a really tough day, but was staying with me in my office. I
took a break to try and get some more water down her, and the strain was
just too much for her. I heard the air leave her and she was gone.

Gary
