From: "John Beamish" We have 3 surviving vets from WWI. Of the three, 1 has been living in the US since the mid-30's. When the last Aussie WWI vet died, there was a state funeral for him. There is considerable discussion here about what to do. There's even an active petition for a state funeral for the last one (the one living in the US says he doesn't think he should be considered since he's been in the US for so long). If there is, it will be the first time for a non-PM, non-GG to have a state funeral (at least, that's how I recall the article in the paper). My preference is for a day of remembrance for all those who fought rather than a state funeral for the one who survived the longest.
