I got it... tonight, I had the speaker on, and the modems shut down while
the line held for a few seconds.  There's an audible "Tick"
sound.  About one pulse every second - sounds like a clock function.  Being
cross coupled into the line.

Frank gets told in the morning.  WAHHHOOEOOOOOO... got the beggar...:-)
