   What kinda modem do you have..if its a Rockwell chip
   modem then you can call a bbs and use the +++ command
   to get to command mode then use  line Quality command
   (AT&Q I think, dont remember to well)  this and
   then a/ a/ a/ a/ to get some values... if this returns
   less than  8 ..then your line should support 33.6k
   " IF "  the modem your calling ALSO supports 33.6k.
   So even thou you may have a PERFECT line the modem
   your calling ALSO must have a PERFECT line to support
   33.6k as this is the top of the analog limit (just about)
   I have a less than 8 line and connect with X2 to my ISP
   about 30miles and two towns away at 53.333k
