you're off by 40+ years... local calls in the US have been free and unlimited
for a lot longer... as a pre/early teenager i used to spend hours on the phone
with my girl friend(s) long before BBSes were even thought of... there were
times when i'd wake up with the phone still in my hand and could hear her/them
breathing while sleeping on the other end...
