subject: looking at a boat

DC> HN> Ok, you didn't tell me what happened yet...so I'll go get another cup
DC> HN> o java and you go ahead and start the story....and make it good!
DC>Anyhow, I went into irons to adjust the downhaul and cunningham.
DC>Unfortunately, the boat had other plans. You'd have to see the
DC>boat to see how it happen, but the mainsheet bound up. By the
DC>time I was able to get back to it to release it, the boat went
DC>over to a reach, and broached and turtled.
Found out how to be a sea anchor the hard way! These things always
happen when you'll be the most embarrassed, but in this case I'm sure
that you were happy to have assistance close by!
DC>One thing I think I did find out was what those 2 extra corks
DC>where for: There's 2 floatation tanks under the rails. When
DC>it went over, they filled with at least 10 gals of water each.
DC>Rather than adding additional bouyancy, they acted like sinking
DC>keels instead. I'm sure it was the added weight plus the lost
DC>bouyancy as to why we couldn't right it.
DC>BTW, when I first got the boat ready for my first sail on it
DC>before I bought it, I was told that those 2 corks were "extras"!
Well I guess you can say you are learning all about your boat's "extras"
10 gallons of water on each side is a lot of weight to try to pull
out of the water!
DC>Next summer, during one of the sailing courses, I think I'll
DC>test them out and find out how well they work. Should something
DC>go wrong, two of the crew on the chase boat have wet suits
DC>to give additional assistance....
Maybe you should borrow the wetsuit before you get the dunking!
chat with you soon!
