KK>Can anyone give me the pros or cons of buying Unidens Sportcat handheld

Keith,
I'm no expert, but here's something to think about. Is the company
you are planning to buy the scanner from including anything with your
scanner? If not check out Scanner World USA (800) 476-7640. They offer
the black or yellow versions of the Uniden BearCat SportCat Scanner
for $159.99 + $8.00 Shipping/Handling. They include AC Adapter/Charger,
rubber antenna, belt clip, owner's manual, Ni-Cad battery and earphone.
Some companies (like Radio Shack) will charge you extra for the
AC Adapter\Charger and battery(s), etc... which in the end means you
pay more than what you expect(ed). With a scanner you'll find out
real quick (if don't already know) that you need to use re-chargable
Ni-Cads because a scanner will only run a few days before it needs new
batteries or a re-charge of the Ni-Cad rechargable batteries.
Another thing to think about is the type of battery(s) the scanner
requires. Some companies design their scanners so that you must buy
battery packs from them when your scanner's battery(s) need to be
replaced and they are not ashamed to charge you as much as $39.99 + S/H
for replacement battery(s)! I found this out with a company called
Cobra and I believe Uniden makes their products. That scanner cost
about $150.00 but the replacement battery pack was $39.95 + S/H!!!!
I ended up throwing that scanner out with the garbage. :( The same
Scanner World USA catalog lists the replacement Ni-Cad battery back
for the Uniden BearCat SC150Y/B SportCat Scanner at $24.99 plus S/H.
A "Heavy Duty Long Life (800 MAH) optional Ni-Cad Battery Pack is
listed at $29.99 plus S/H. That's more than over-the-counter Ni-Cad
batteries would cost and if you have to order the replacement
battery(s) thru the mail that's just always a lot of fun. :)
Strangely enough Radio Shack scanners use over the counter ni-cad
batteries. I use a Radio Shack Pro 60 handheld scanner that uses 6
AA over-the-counter ni-cad batteries.
All that said, the SportCat looks to be a good scanner in terms of
price and frequency coverage. Good luck!
