the perl install was done by the CPAN module... compile and everything...
perl v5.8.0... i seem to (still) have some perl v5.6.0 stuff installed,
too...

this is an old mandrake install... mandrake v7.1 (helium) with (at least)
an updated kernel (2.2.19-6.4-mdk) and all the fixes that the updater can
find in rpmfind.net...
