JG> Hello everyone!
JG> I have a question that is more or less based on personal opinion, but
JG> I still value any opinions on the matter. I am interested in getting a
JG> USR Courier (I have had a 2400 baud modem for 1 and a half years,
JG> enough said ), prefably the newest mode number (I believe it was
JG> February), the 33.6 V.FC, V.34+, V.Everything modem, and of course the
JG> X2 upgrade (which from I understand I will be entitled to a free
JG> upgrade to the new compromised standrad when it arrives). However, I
JG> am not sure if I should get the modem and the X2 upgrade, and the wait
JG> for the standrad to come out and upgrade there, or if I should just
JG> wait until the standard is decided and then buy the newest Courier on
JG> the market. Honestly, I have never been out modem shopping. I bought
JG> the 2400 second-hand from a friend, so...
Hum? USR Courier is SOFTWARE UPGRADEABLE, it is about as SOFTWARE
PROGRAMMABLE as a modem gets (except the PowerPC's 9600 modem that uses
FPU's DSP like command)... I upgraded my 20MHz modem to X2, no problem,
just run the command and there we go... And if you get a NEW Courier, it
comes with X2 ALREADY, there is no choice but to get the modem with X2...
And OF COURSE you can upgrade to the ITU standard whenever it comes out.
But if you are running a BBS, you don't need Analog modem with X2 or
otherwise... because it require an digital (be it ISDN or otherwise)
connection on one side. Good Luck...

JG> Also, I would like to know what is the real difference between the
JG> K56FLEX protocol and the X2 protocol, aside from their incompatibility
JG> with each other and possibly their negotiations. With the new
JG> standard, I guess that reaslly isn't that important. Call it a
JG> personal quirk, and it would help to answer some questions.
They are 100% incompatible... which means that you'd better forget about
mixing them... :) AFAIK, they are pretty much at the same level... except
USR got a head start in development, and then marketing... :)
... My other computer is a Cray, my other car is a Pinto...
