It's a very contentious issue, and has only been demonstrated convincingly
in a few cases (such as the small wasp colonies). If there were lots of
examples you would expect the literature to be full of them. In fact
"selfish herd" theory seems to be much better in describing the
behaviour of
most social groups. For instance, if anything is altruistic then it is an
alarm call, but we find that the incidence of calling is much less when the
caller is unrelated to the rest of the group (for instance, in species where
males disperse and females remain with the natal group males will generally
call less).
