subject: Style question

I have defined my normal paragraph style to have a first line indent
of 0.5" . I have discovered that when I am done typing a paragraph
and hit the return key to start a new one, it does not do the initial
indent the way that I want it to. There are two ways I can make it
indent. One is to have an extra space after the cursor point when I
hit the return key. Then it will indent. If I happened to forget to
do that (which is very kludgey and unnatural) then I can reset the
style for the paragraph - but it always seems to want to coerce me into
redefining the style to fit, rather than changing the paragraph to fit
  the style.
Can anyone tell me how to make it automatically make the next thing
equal to a "normal" paragraph as defined with an initial indent?
The style definition does say that the next item is to be normal.
