Your Utility probably has a stack of GOOD used, sad looking house kwH meters
and will let you have one cheap, or free.
I used to own one..... I spliced it into a regular short extension cord, for
just the reason you mention. Make sure you are competent to do that little
addition. The outility might just ask you that, they would not like to have
