The Marines married a 4.2" mortar tube with a 75mm howitzer carriage
to create the Howtar.  The idea was to have a 4.2" mortar that could
be towed behind a jeep and rapidly emplaced.

They forgot the maximum elevartion of the 75mm howitzer carriage is 700
mils, and the minimum elevation of the 4.2" mortar is 800 mils.  That
meant to emplace it, they had to dig a hole -- putting the wheels on the
top of the mound of earth, and the trail in the hole. :-)
