subject: USR Courier V34 problems

RB>> I wondered why I saw you poke your nose into the USR_Modems Conf.

RB>> (It's not like you )

PE> It's not like me to tag the USR_MODEMS echo just to snoop? How

 PE> would you know?

Guilty of snooping (myself) In some of your haunts.

PE> David Begley's is one of these you-beaut flashrom Netcomms.

PE> 26400 every single time. Paul Markham's is a PCMCIA Netcomm

RB>> I suppose, They are the ones with the bad interpretation of V.FC
& V.34.

RB>> When they make he new chips, they might fix the Aggressive negotiation

RB>> Subsequent fall back garbage.

PE> Then again, if these VERY COMMON Rockwell modems are connecting

PE> fine to other Rockwell modems, that means it is fixable in the

PE> USR. Certainly the very least USR should be doing is having an

PE> *option* to do Rockwell-style negotiation.

No denying this, but alot has to be said for good phone lines.

A BBS (Maestro VFC) that I call from home everyday (using Telstra) can only

yield me 26400 connects with my courier but 28800 connects everytime with a

SupraFaxModem 288i. At home when I poll David D, I get 33600/31200 with out

fail and from up here I get 33600/33600 without fail.

I blamed the USR. I have not changed any settings, but am now calling from

Mossman (FNQ) and using Optus and get 28800 without fail to this BBS and

33600/33600 to David.

So I have to blame the lines (or Telstra)

My lines at home are you beaut System 12 lines with audible noise and the lines

up here are the oldest things you have ever seen (I believe X-Bar, because you

can hear the clunking as you connect - I will find out for sure) also with

audible noise. Yet you may have seen my ATY11 to David. It Is Perfect.

It can only be the lines in my case. And I believe also in your case,

Though it might not be your particular side of the exchange.

I now shift my blame from USR to Telstra..

I am using Optus up here...(I don't know if they are using Telstra from

here to Brisbane or using their own lines..But they did me a favour

I connected with your BBS this morning (from Mossman, Far North QLD) for 20

odd minutes (connect 31200 an it immediately speed shifted up to 33600.)

PE> I also have connected with DD at 33600/33600. You say below that

PE> I am using the Austel Nobbled Version. I am happy to change ROMs

PE> again. Tell me the name and location of a decent set of ROMs and

 PE> I'll FREQ it.

I uploaded some to you this morning.

I gave you the 1st November95 US/Canada Domestic code to look at.

The Austel 5 July SDL (this is the recommended one for you)

The V34Courier manual in text form)

(Though you can use ATs$, AT%$, and AT&$ for a more uptodate online manual)

The Austel May 15 SDL (sorry I stuffed up, I meant to give you the

Austel 18 July SDL)

PE>> rubbish. At this stage I am looking at getting either a

PE>> Netcomm or a Yum Cha V34 modem.

RB>> The best Rockwell based modem to buy (non Austel, which means you are

RB>> naturally not interested ) is the SupraFaxModem V.34 series (Best

RB>> connectivity, bang for buck and features.

PE> And the best Austel? And don't say USR. Of if you do say USR, then

PE> tell me the second best.

No, I cant say USR, I have had too little hands on experience with the Austel

version (almost as bad connects from home, as you) But my lines were faulty

at the time of testing and it also used the 18July SDL.

Damn hard to find one, OK, Microcom Deskport Fast.

RB>> 99% of connectivity problems are solved with the ATS27=32 or ATS27=48

PE> 32 disables LAPM? I want LAPM. I might be happy to disable the

PE> detection phase though, since I don't know what that is, so I'll

 PE> try ATS27=48.

I use ATS27=48.

RB>> Plug it back in and do an +++ and ATY11 while on line to a 28800 modem

RB>> Give us a dump of ATi6 ATI11 & ATY11.

PE> Ok, will post later. Need to stuff around to get +++ to work.

PE> What is "Domestic"? Do you mean US code?

Yes

PE>I can't load US code on my modem apparently.

You can only try, It will pop up an error message if it won't let you.

RB>> Can you post us your typical Recv/TX level figures, please

PE> To who? I'll post the last connect to Dave Hatch's USR...

 PE> # 01 Feb 06:53:41.85 Recv/Xmit Level (-dB) 25/15

This is fairly good ( I must try a connect to Dave Hatch from here tomorrow)

I get :

Speed 33600/31200

Recv/Xmit Level (-dBm) 25.7/12.0

SNR ( dB ) 37.7

Near Echo Loss ( dB ) 2.2

Far Echo Loss ( dB ) 39.8

Roundtrip Delay (msec) 3

From home to Dave drummond

AND

Speed 33600/33600

Recv/Xmit Level (-dBm) 17.1/12.1

SNR ( dB ) 38.7

Near Echo Loss ( dB ) 7.0

Far Echo Loss ( dB ) 29.1

Roundtrip Delay (msec) 24

And this from FNQ to Dave Drummond (1800Km)

AND FROM ME TO YOU This morning:

Speed 33600/33600

Modulation V.34+

Carrier Freq ( Hz ) 1959/1959

Symbol Rate 3429/3429

Trellis Code 64S-4D/64S-4D

Nonlinear Encoding ON/ON

Precoding ON/ON

Shaping ON/ON

Preemphasis (-dB ) 4/2

Recv/Xmit Level (-dBm) 22.3/12.1

SNR ( dB ) 37.9

Near Echo Loss ( dB ) 7.1

Far Echo Loss ( dB ) 23.6

Roundtrip Delay (msec) 37

At least this gives you an Idea of your Signal to noise Ratio.

RB>> You should get very good 28800 connects to the Netcomm's at Canon Aust's

RB>> BBS in Sydney, I do from Brisbane, Try them.

PE> Which are what sort of Netcomms, so that I can compare with

PE> David Begleys? Also, there may be a difference as to when

PE> the USR is answering or originating.

I am not sure I which model they are. Last time I called It was an 1800 number

and now the number has changed.

Best talk to Andrew See (modems were new in or around October.

I'll message him.

PE>> 5. AT&F1 sets S56 equal to 16 instead of the default of 0 listed

PE>> in the manual.

RB>> Are you looking at ATI4 (Defaults) or ATI5 (NVram settings)

PE> ATI4 is not defaults, it is current settings. I am looking at

PE> current settings after typing in AT&F1.

PE> No, the previous person (the owner) thought that it was not

PE> possible to load anything other than the Australian code, and

PE> never attempted to do so. I thought it was possible, but

PE> checked with Bill Grimsley first, and he told me it was not

PE> possible, so I never tried either.

Some of the Beta codes could load in any, because they were closely related.

Try it.

PE> trial. Also, Rod Speed has already gone and proven two of

PE> the faults on other USR's modems.

PE>> 8. Failed to connect to Hayes modem at all. Very weird sounds

RB>> Use S27=48 for any modem that hangs up on answering.

PE> Ok, will try it next time the Hayes is online, assuming the new

 PE> ROMs haven't fixed it.

PE>> 9. A Netcomm modem (PCMCIA or something) gets connects of 1200,

PE>> 2400, 14400 and 28800 with me. This also happened with the

PE>> older ROMs, and the caller has not called since I changed ROMs,

PE>> so cannot confirm the continued existance of this problem.

RB>> What is your number. Put the Courier on line and tell me when.

PE> The courier will be online for the next 2.5 weeks, and then I

PE> have to make a decision. My number is 02-436-1785. BFN. Paul.

Thanks, Done this morning, Hope you don't mind me uploading some SDL's

to you.

It was a pity to waste such a good connect.
