You can't buy paint with lead anymore, according to what I've been told.
It was banned to prevent lead poisoning in human kids.
For painting a cage, your main concern would be to buy a paint that says
"child safe when dry" or "safe for use on childrens' toys or
playthings". I just bought some Krylon brand heavy duty spray lacquer.
If the weather cooperates this weekend (it has to be 70F or higher to
use the paint) I'm going to experiment and paint an old rusty Prevue
#125 cage that someone gave me. (I figure if it doesn't work, I'm only
out the cost of the paint...)
When you DO paint the cage, let it dry outside (in a protected place)
for several days, until you can no longer smell the paint.
Good luck! Let me know how your project turns out!
