I already said I used UPDATECD. Do you call that "fiddling"?
Others are apparently happy with eCS. I have kept a current license to
support the OS/2 effort. But, for me, eCS is just W4 made harder to
install. I have never gotten eCS to install on a "USED" HDD except for
my laptop, and I have typically had at least five functioning machines
to try it on. The laptop has eCS 1.2, WXP and W2K, and probably every
I/O there is. All installations went well, and things work.
My primary desktop has W4, eCS 1.2 & 2.0, W98SE, W2K and FReeDOS.
Whatever versions of W9 and DOS I have are all on C: FAT16. Everything
else is on a single extended.
For eCS, I install it as a primary on a clean, 3G HDD, and give it the
drive letter I chose. I then copy it to an extended on the work machine.
Again, YMMV
