I built my own started from my p3 smp guy.  Still a few kinks to work out
but I managed to get a half decent kernel built for x86_64 with 32-bit
compatibility.  The biggest hurdle was some of the 32-bit apps that rely on
shorts being 16-bit.  syslinux (isolinux) was the BIGGEST bugger.  I think
it is okay now.

Why?  I haven't seen anything in DOS worth slavaging let alone running on a
nonDOS system.

Since IBM sold it out it has primarily been gcc ports of the unixie stuff. 
I see little there that isn't a port.  From what I see I am guessing Linux
is vastly superior seeing it has a HUGE headstart.
