I just ran "tar xfvj /opt/mbse/mbsebbs-cvs.tar.bz2" in /tmp and it unpacked
the nightly tarball in /tmp/mbsebbs. Sounds like you already have an mbsebbs
directory in there? Maybe delete it and start from scratch.

I always build and run mbse as user mbse. Only make install should be run
as root. You also need to be root to run the ./SETUP.sh before you build
MBSE for thew first time. Aside from that I always run the BBS as mbse.
If you were root when you unpacked the tarball and ran ./SETUP.sh the first
time you installed just delete that directory and unpack the tarball again
logged in as mbse and take it from the top. ./configure, make, su to root,
make install, exit back to mbse and if mbtask isn't running already run
"/etc/init.d/mbsebbs start" (assuming your init scripts are there, gentoo
may be different from debian).

Something isn't right I would say.. :) You already have user mbse and group
bbs there right?
You can log in as user mbse and unpack the tarball, run ./configure and
make? If so run "make >mbsebuild.log 2>&1" and report
any problems.
If that is all successful su to root, "export LOGNAME=mbse", make install,
exit back to mbse and all should be ready to go.
Ttyl :-),
