PC WEEK: Corel, Softbank increase WordPerfect support partnership

Corel Corp. is expanding its relationship with Softbank Services
Group for WordPerfect technical support.
Corel will now handle only "core and complex technology issues"
relating to technical support, company officials said. Other calls
will be transferred to Softbank.
The two companies entered into a help-desk relationship earlier this
month.
A Corel official who asked to remain anonymous said today the
company has laid off 60 to 70 people at its Orem, Utah, technical
support center due to the switch. The layoffs represent the "final
stage of the transition" of WordPerfect from Novell Inc. to Corel.
"Technical support was very top-heavy in management," the official
added. "They were removed from technical issues themselves. Since
we've moved all those calls, it really didn't make sense to keep
such a top-heavy group."
Softbank Services Group is a Softbank Corp. company, as is
Ziff-Davis Publishing Co., the publisher of PC Week.
