Hello Fred!
Wednesday July 30 1997 from Fred Hatfield 1:396/65 to Harry Bush:

ore

I'm not subscribed to POLITICS (and that's US politics anyway) but feel
free to forward my msg or use quotation if you like... I live in Latvia,
one of Baltic countries which was occupied for long decades by USSR
- and I _know_ what does it really mean "government control and restrictions
over telecommunications". It was forbidden to listen even to unauthorised
foreign broadcasts, for example VOA or Radio Liberty. One could get long
jail sentences for that or been deported to far North. These frequences were
also heavily jammed (BTW good reason to build nice oriented shortwave
antenas to minimise jamming, and to learn how to hide such antenas below
the roof...)
The result: almost everybody listened. ;-))) Well, we had different
traditions and centuries-long experience not to trust government and it's
restrictions.
Sometimes I wonder about some US people speaking right like communists,
wanting more and more state control etc. Been there... no thanks. But
these are "US internal affairs"... Sorry for possible partial offtopic.
Best wishes, Harry
