I entirely agree. Check out New Deal Office 97, which is the "old"
Geoworks Ensemble running on the version of GEOS used in the HP OmniGo
PDAs. Just relaunched officially on 17 March this year, New Deal Inc
plan to move it to GEOS 3.0 (as used in Nokia 9000) and add Internet
capability. I find its predecessor Ensemble 2.01 does all the desktop
publishing I need and much more. So much so that I have taken on the
republishing of various add-on programs, which will shortly include a
Web browser, HTML page editor and more.
For those not familiar with the GEOS desktop, it is a "Works" class
program which is particularly strong in word processing, dtp and
graphics handling, with spreadsheet, database, banner maker, notepad,
card index, calculator etc. and only requires a 286 with 2MB of RAM for
reasonable performance. And you should see it fly on a 686 or Pentium.
Who needs bloatware?!
New Deal's Web site is http://www.newdealinc.com and mine is
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~pensey if you want further details.
Regards
Peter Campbell
