Our (Australian) Prime Minister has consistently hinted for a couple of
years that the US is welcome to the two Australians held at Guantanamo Bay.
Both major political parties have been more-or-less in agreement with this
view. The left opposition makes noises to a contrary position, but not very
loudly.

The main point is that if the Australians were brought home, they would be
freed instantly by the courts because there is simply no way any Australian
law could be applicable (or even if applicable, it could not be proven that
the law had been broken).

Only recently has the media taken some tentative steps towards providing a
sympathetic view of the two Australian detainees.

Before 9/11 I would have been among those hotly opposed to the above brutal
and dangerously anti-golden-thread-of-justice view.
