| subject: | NetBios / TCP/IP |
Sorry to ask what is probably a very basic question, but my life has
recently got more complex with the addition of an XP and an XP X64
machine at home.
Back in 1998 I met networks first hand - 3Com and Novell. I soon
discovered that for a non-techie, 3Com was much easier, so standardised
the company's networks on that. Of course 3Com then dumped it's product,
and the upgrade was LAN Manager. Over about a decade I upgraded to KLAN
Server and Warp Server in 7 small LAN's, and looked after these as my
spare time job. The 70 odd machines were all OS/2, so it really was a
breeze.
Now I'm in a mixed environment and my lack of knowledge has come home to
hit me. It all started with a Brother HL-2700CN colour laser. It
networked fine - until we tried to use it from a client Terminal Server
session under Win2K. Remote printing wouldn't work.
With help I quickly discovered that if I did a start run \\brn_99999
(using the actual number of the Brother network device). Win2K would
show the printer, I could choose BINARY_P1, and it set up a printer with
a special connection type which I can't recreate any other way. That
worked with TS remote printing.
So everything was fine until we added two complications. One was a
Brother MFC-9240CN (or is it 9420?). It's the same as the existing
printer with a scanner on top and a fax built in, and of course it
copies. It takes the same consumables, should work under eCS with the
same driver, and has the same networking - NOT!
It took a while, but I have now found a small difference - it only
offers TCP/IP over NetBios - not straight NetBios. And that doesn't
work. No matter what I do, from any OS (including XP where I have added
NetBios so it can talk with the rest of the network), I cannot find or
connect to the BRN_999999 device.
This has two implications. First I can't remote print from Terminal
server sessions. Second, I can't connect from eCS. In fact in changing
all of our machines from NetBios to NetBios over TCP/IP (which I think
was necessary to get WinXP connecting), I've lost access from eCS to the
original HL-2700CN laser.
I've had a quick peek on Google and I'm more confused than when I
started. I see Wins and LMHosts as potential solutions - but I have no
idea how to use them - esp in Windoze. (I'm not even sure about the eCS
use, but think I know what to do.) I don't use DHCP (except for the
Terminal Server dumb terminals in our main (remote to me) office. I have
three locations set up so my laptops use the same IP address in all three.
If I did use DHCP, at least in one office it would have to be on a
router - because that office has no permanent PC - only laptops when
we're in it.
I keep reading NetBios is obsolete - which if I don't use I believe
means I can't do a net use. If that is the case, how can I print to
network printers from Win 3.1 apps 9which I still use extensively?
As you can see, I've gone way beyond where I have ever been before, and
can't see the way ahead. Any help in simple terms would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks
