I've never heard of the 414. I've got a 424 and really like it, Vineburg
uses the 464 (which has XLR inputs)... this is the older one with a 3-speed
transport, so it can record at high speed for quality, standard speed for
regular tapes, and a slow speed to save tape when working out ideas.

The entire series is also known as the "Porta Potty"

Ugg. I don't care for Fostex at all. For the same money, you get more
features in Tascam equipment.

The Porta series has a cheap mechanical transport. The 400 series, as far as
I know (and I don't know about the 414) is full logic, meaning there's no
mechanical connection between the button and transport.
