BILL CLINTON'S ARLINGTON ADDRESS
Memorial Day - 1998, Arlington National Cemetery
By Carl Limbacher
The President's remarks:
Four score and seven fundraisers ago, James Riady brought forth a great
donation. Conceived in China, and dedicated to the proposition that donors
the world over are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great struggle,
testing whether any party so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.
We are met today on this hallowed ground, in what we regard as "a donor
maintenance event." We dedicate a portion of this event to those who, with
open wallets, gave so generously in our cause. It is altogether proper and
fitting that they should have done so.
But in a larger sense, we cannot celebrate - we cannot commemorate - we
cannot consecrate their generosity. These brave donors, living and dead,
have done so themselves, far beyond our poor power to add or detract.
The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here today. But it
can never forget the big bucks they gave away. It is for us the living,
rather, to be dedicated to the unfinished fundraising, which those who lay
here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here
dedicated to the great task remaining before us: the election of Al Gore.
For these honored dead we ask increased contribution to that cause, for which
they gave their last full measure of donation. In that spirit we here highly
resolve, that these dead shall not have given in vain. And that this nation

under Hillary and I, shall have a new birth of generosity - So that
government of the Democrats, by the Democrats and for the Democrats - Shall
not perish from the earth.
