Sure you can.  I buy most of my stuff used.  :-)  But you're right that newer
machines are very much an issue.

My attitude five years ago was this: Why purchase a new incompatible machine
when I can get a perfectly supported machine that does what I want for US$100
on eBay?

Now that I have several machines, though, I've stopped purchasing those.  :-)
