   The #define changes things in the text to be compiled and
   does not require any memory in the runtime code.
   If it is a constant value, why have it stored as a variable
   at all. C still has global constants, but in some cases,
   there is simply no need to use a dynamic variable when the
   value will never change. A #define saves a bit of memory
   and perhaps a few clock cycles.
