Those amphetamines were issued to the pilots by their superiors.  Nothing
clandestine about it. Of course the military did try to deflect attention
away from that. After all, it didn't look good that they were dosing their
pilots with drugs that, without a prescription, are illegal in civilian
life. Did the pilots have prescriptions? Hell no. Never under estimate the
capacity for stupidity in the military.
