The mistake you Brits have always made is branding as terrorists those fighting for freedom from Brit tyranny. Big mistake, because you then are in the humiliating position of having to negotiate with those "terrorists" when you finally decide to that the cost of keeping them under control is no longer sustainable. I think of Jomo Kenyata, for example. Branded a terrorist by London and the local white louts, he became one of Africa's early heroes and was universally recognized as such. But then so was Washington. For that matter, there have been so many as the Empire crumbled. All branded terrorists, all in fact freedom fighters.
