Don't be daft. Geographically you are correct, but only the US uses "American"
as a self-identifier, and when people refer to "Americans" everyone understands
them to be refering to people from the USA. No different than if you were to
refer to Scots, Irish, or Welsh as "British" and then wonder why they felt the
need to correct you.
