Hmm.. that sucks.. on the mac side of things, there is this little box called
the geoport telecom adapter.. it can act as a speaker 
phone/fax/modem/answering machine (mainly because the mac serial ports can 
move data at up to 2 Megabits/sec).  The only problem is that the entire 
modem is implemented through software, but it is an extention, so you can use 
any software you want with it..
