subject: Biking Problems Again

I am back off the bike for a little while. I have been starting
to have problems with my health again and seeing that I have been
having some balance problems I figured to stay off the bike till
the doctors can find the problems. I know one was low blood
pressure and that was caused from all the extra exercise I was
getting but there also might be a link to some blockage of the
arteries to my neck area. Will be having that checked out
Wednesday.
I hope to be back on the bike soon as there is still some great
biking weather up here in New York.
How lake in the year do some of you ride? What extra equipment do
you use during the fall riding weather? I did not ride as much
when the temperatures got into the 60s as I was having problems
with angina back last fall but I am hoping to ride till the snow
flies this year if I can find out why I have problems with the
spinning sensation every now and then.

Bill, here in Milwaukee, we do a club ride every year on the 1st of
January. Depending on the weather, we ride anywhere from just a couple
of miles just to say we did it, to 15-20. Kind of our version of the
Polar Bear Club that goes for a swim on the first of the year. I have
found that cross-country ski clothing works well for biking in the cold
weather, except for the feet. Haven't found anything that keeps the
feet warm yet if its really cold outside. However, wearing the same
woolen socks I wear with my downhill stuff helps - they aren't too
thick, so I can still get the shoes on, and they do keep me a lot warmer
than the regular cotton socks. After the ride, it's tradition for a
certain one of our club members to hold a brunch, where I'm sure we add
many more calories than we burn, but everyone seems to have a good time.
I don't think there is as much a problem with "late in the year," as
there is with inclement weather - snow and ice can be really treacherous
on a road bike.

Depends on the comfort of the rider. Obviously, the faster the cadence you
have during a race the better you will perform, assuming you maintain that
cadence. But for riding, whatever your comfort level is, works.
