Depends on what operating system you use.

If you want to do it under Windows, I highly recommend NetSerial (you can
get a 255-node license for $25) from PCMicro
(http://www.pcmicro.com/netserial.html) - you probably have to email Mike
Elhert (mike{at}pcmicro.com) to get the sysop special.

If you want to do it under OS/2, it's SIO/VMODEM all the way.

If it's under DOS, you're on your own. :P
