They are not. SUVs are a cross between the jeep and the station wagon. The first
a small four seater/off-roader and the latter a large car with large cargo
capacity. At that, the original SUV were take-offs on pickup trucks -
essentially putting a cabin on the flat bed. They are still classified as
trucks
for emission purposes, while jeeps are not.

I have no idea what you are getting at with the Land Rover and microbus
thing? What is that supposed to demonstrate; that the Land Rover driver was
conservative, while the microbus driver was a flower child? Are you really
that na‹ve?

The alleged oil shortage was in fact alleged because there was no decrease
in the amount of oil on the world market during that alleged shortage.
There was a shortage at the pump because of Nixon administration policy
which deliberately withheld oil from the pump for fear there would not be
enough heating oil for the coming winter. No conspiracies involved here. No
left wing/right wing conflict.

Subsequent Congressional investigations outlined it all in great detail.
Where were you? Mindlessly blaming OPEC for the shortage at the pump
because that was what Nixon told you to believe? Of course. I would expect
nothing else.
