| subject: | TCP/IP printing |
I've just had the worst month ever - at least in terms of technology
problems stopping me from getting work done. In fact I was closer than
I've ever been to throwing out OS/2. If it was a straight business
decision, I'd have to do it - but given the personal and financial
investment I've made in OS/2 / eCS since about 1990 or thereabouts, I
find it hard to just walk away. So I have reinstalled one eCS system
that got so bad almost everything refused to work - I couldn't even add
a new printer.
I've now given up trying to access the Brother HL-2700CN and it's big
brother Brother MFC-9420CN via NetBios. I'm now running netbios/tcpip
for a variety of reasons whereas before I was running straight netbios -
which worked with the HL - but not the MFC - the networking on the
latter only offers netbios/tcpip.
So now now I can't print at all - which is a little inconvenient. I
understand the answer is probably to use TCP/IP printing with lpr or lpd
or some combination of these things. I have seen printer settings in
Tcp/Ip Config version 1.05.1 by Reinhard Berger (I thought this might
help me - but it still requires knowledge I don't have). I have searched
the Internet for info on os/2 and tcp/ip printing / lpr etc - but only
stuff in a foreign language. I don't speak unix / techno / whatever it
is .
In the tcpip config program there are three fields under printing. I
assume I put one brother printer network ip address in there. The name
of the printer under netbios was binary_p1 (although since I'm using
postscript I wondered about experimenting with one called postscript_p1).
The third field is number of LPD connections. Since I have two brother
printers with network devices, I thought I'd try 2 - but I got the
impression that maybe LPD refers to using the local PC as a print server
- which I'm not doing.
If I changed these fields, is that all I have to do to connect to a
printer. I know i could try and see, but honestly I don't expect it to
work that simply, and after spending the last month battling many
problems - some related and some not - after making the simple change
from netbios to netbios/tcpip, I'm reluctant to make when I don't
understand the implications.
If this is basically it, then how do I add the second printer? Perhaps I
can find the modified files and duplicate the first printer settings?
If I can get that far, hopefully the Win-OS/2 printing needs will sort
themselves out.
Any simple help here much appreciated. Thanks.
