You might be missing the point - do you think they really want to find life
on mars?  Noooo.  They want to test Tom Hendricks' theory of the genesis of
life, then move on to Margulis's theory of symbiogenesis.  We'll have to
wait a few million years before we can the run experiments on dinosaur
life/death, and eventually we'll get to hominid~human experiments.

Think of Mars as one big lab in which we can test evolutionary hypothesis.

Exciting, isn't it :)
