I don't disagree with anything you said in your posting. Some of what
you said seemed prompted by your reaction to Herbert; I think that's
both understandable and unwise.
Anyone who wants to continue using OS/2 should care about eComStation.
It is the only way to buy a current license for the OS/2 product. IBM
withdrew that from marketing over a year ago, and next month IBM ends
support for the product.
Updates helpful to users, like the new PDF viewer, Lucide, and the
OpenOffice.org v2 for eComStation and OS/2, are funded by revenues
from eComStation.
The 2.x releases of eComStation include Bootable JFS, users of this
feature in the current beta report significant improvement in
performance. And there is andditional support for current hardware,
like the ACPI support and support for multiple processors, which is
nice for uses of the new two processor systems.
There are other bells and whistles, some nice and some more than nice
if the user needs them. Support for additional file systems. Support
for Samba, including the NetDrive plugin.
Herbert went overboard with his dramatic statements. But your comment
about having 96% of eComStation is also an exaggeration. And the fact
is, eComStation has been undergoing significant development and will
continue to be enhanced in 2007. And the cost to the Warp4 user is not
"hundreds of dollars". It is less than IBM charged for SWC, and
delivers all that was available on SWC and many additional and
significant features never available from IBM.
I would never expect a user to pay for things the user didn't need, or
didn't want. So, I support your total lack of interest in eComStation.
Having said that, for users who want to see OS/2 actively supported
and enhanced, eComStation is important.
